È un musicista tuttofare, Michael
Nyman. Ha scritto per il teatro, per il cinema, per spettacoli multimediali,
su commissione. Infaticabile, è riuscito pure a rappresentare, nell'ottobre
scorso, al Teatro Argentina di Roma, tre diversi progetti (tra cui in anteprima
mondiale il "Mosé", basato su di un saggio che Freud scrisse
sulla statua realizzata da Michelangelo).
Questo doppio CD racchiude il meglio della sua produzione musicale per il
cinema.
Il suo prestigio è indissolubilmente legato a quello del regista
visionario Peter Greenaway per il quale ha scritto colonne sonore per ben
11 film (tra cui "The Draughtsman's Contract", "Drowning
By Numbers", "The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover",
"Prospero's Books"), ma anche a quello di Jane Campion, la regista
di Lezioni di piano, Volker Schlondorff (The Ogre), Neil Jordan (The End
Of The Affair), Michael Winterbottom (Wonderland), e la lista potrebbe proseguire.
Il gusto per gli impasti timbrici, per la ripetitività minimalista
e per i canoni della musica barocca, rappresentano i cardini della sua cifra
stilistica che si arricchisce della curiosa quanto interessante attitudine
a trovare ispirazione dal patrimonio della musica classica e contemporanea
(che sia il Purcell di "The Fairy Queen", nell'interludio di Chasing
Sheep Is Best Left To Shepards, o il Brahms di I Quartetti per piano n.
1 op. 25 per il brano Skating, o ancora, Mozart, una delle influenze dichiarate,
in Wheelbarrow Walk).
Un doppio cd essenziale e esauriente, per uno dei musicisti più importanti
degli ultimi anni.
